Over 550 Photoshop Brush Packs Free for Commercial Use

This article was originally posted on August 26, 2008. This is one of our two most popular posts of all time on the blog so we wanted to go through it and make sure it was still up to date.

There have been some changes, a handful of people had changed their licenses and some were gone all together. There are also quite a few new additions that we hope you’ll find useful.

As a side note, we no longer know how many packs are included so we can’t guarantee the 550+ number.

Gradients are one of the most important aspects to be considered while designing a Web 2.0 Site. Even a simple button is of a gradient. So I decided to make some cool set of Gradients and put them together in an Adobe Photoshop Gradient file (.grd).

These gradients are fully scalable, what i mean here is its not an image or so.. just create a shape and apply the gradient - As simple as that. You could create Logos, Backgrounds, Tabs, Buttons, Wallpapers, Toolbars and all sorts of stuff…

Weekly Download: Effects for Adobe Illustrator, Series 2

I get asked all the time how to create bevels in Adobe Illustrator.

There are two answers for this: use the 3D filter, in which case you're limited to flat surfaces, or fudge it by combining multiple instances of your graphic, in which case you're stuck spending too much time on a simple effect that's not easily repeatable.

So I've decided to dip into my shallow reservoir of programming knowledge to present you with a few preset bevel filters that will hopefully get you through some simple tasks that require resolution-independent, Photoshop-style bevels.

Retouching Photos with Background Textures

Our Tip #3 deals with line drawings and how to create a watercolor from them using Photoshop.

In this installment, we will take a photograph, and overlay textures to create a "watercolor".

To keep the tutorial simple, I've kept the layers and therefore the effect to a minimum.

Having said that, sometimes subtle effects are more impressive than ones that  are overwhelming.

Get More-Natural Adjustments with the Illustrator “Reshape” Tool

A hidden gem in my opinion, Illustrator’s “Reshape” tool can come in very handy in a variety of situations.

In a nutshell, the Reshape tool allows you to drag a single point on a path and it tries to retain the overall shape of the entire path, while you only move the one anchor point.

What? I’ll explain below.

55 Seamless Line & Crosshatch Swatches

The first graphic design software I ever learned was Macromedia Fireworks. For those of you familiar with the software you may be aware of the many tileable vertical, horizontal, diagonal and crosshatch patterns that ship with the software. These patterns were great; they allowed me to quickly create graphical mockups without having to spend a lot of time trying to get background tiles to line up properly. When I began branching out to other design programs such as Illustrator or Photoshop however, I quickly noticed how those patterns were missing. I spent a lot time frustrated in those early days trying to figure out how to create repeating backgrounds. Most of the time, I simply gave up and went with a design without those elements.

That’s why today I am releasing a set of 55 seamless lines & crosshatch swatches for Adobe Illustrator.  Just because it took me a little while to figure out how to design these elements, doesn’t mean that you guys should go without them as well.  So feel free to use these patterns in both your personal and professional work.  They are perfect for just about any type of design and I tried to include a variety of patterns with lines of varying width and direction.
